Hello!
This time I am talking about Storm the Bluffs:
https://www.thestormtrs.org/
Storm the Bluffs is organized by Bill and Mandy Hansel, who are now the
new organizers for Trinona as-of this year, and this even is part of
their The Storm race series. Last year Russ N0QK organized this and our
participation to support the event was well received! Thank you again to
all that participated!
This year, I will be organizing us to support this event and am
officially starting recruiting for filling the positions to assist the
event communications. We have 3 positions to fill: HQ/NCS (me + 1 more),
Top (2 volunteers), and Aid Station (2 volunteers). I would like to have
two volunteers per position all day -- can be in shifts -- which will
give us coverage and resiliency if one person has to go, or if one
person has to rotate/move we don't leave a position without coverage.
This is the gist of it, to keep it simple.
For those of you interested and able, do know that the weather can be a
challenge for this event. Last year, it was not possible for most people
to get up to HQ/NCS because the slope going up was a solid sheet of ice.
It was really cold in the morning, too, but by noon it was decent. Top
and Aid locations started a fire to keep warm and overall the event went
by without a problem. So if you do decide to participate, keep in mind
that you will need to keep an eye on the weather and dress accordingly.
Knowing the other two locations and the possibility for it being cold,
extra batteries kept inside your coat/vest will be a must for your HTs,
and to keep them as warm as you can so as to not kill the batteries. In
summary, be prepared to be out in the open without much for
accommodations. Small canopy or small shelter with sides would be a good
idea.
Different from last year, one of the distances has been removed and the
longer route has been simplified. This does not affect our team, but
doesn't hurt to be aware of it. Should allow participants to spend less
time more than half mile away from assistance at any given time. The top
of the bluff position is the most removed one as it is the furthest in,
so I will ask whomever wants to volunteer for that position to take that
into consideration.
We have been requested to be there and ready to be transported to our
positions by 8:30am, but I'd like that to be earlier. Preferably, arrive
earlier to be ready by 8am to 8:15am to be able to discuss the positions
and answer any questions and do a final check on gear. Once more, please
make sure that you test your gear and charge batteries before the event.
This even will run on a simplex frequency like last year and I will
share that as we get closer to the event.
I know during the last club meeting some people said they would
participate... but as my memory is shot, I don't remember WHO those
were! My apologies, and please lets use written communication so I can
add everything together and not miss/forget anyone or any details.
Thank you all and please let me know if there are any questions!
73,
-Sam, KF0ACN
